Cold storage industry in West Bengal took its first steps during the late 1950s when cultivation of potato was initiated in the State. A few enlightened entrepreneurs visualised the prospects of growth of production by organising infrastructure for storage at lower temperature to facilitate release of potato as per market demand after the harvesting is over. Being a progressive and dynamic entrepreneur , Sri Susil Kumar Misra, Chairman, SKM Group, started its first Cold storage in the year 1978. Since then it has become the largest chain of potato cold storage in West Bengal. Kalyan Stores (Dhatrigram) Pvt. Ltd., Agrani Ice & Cold Storage Pvt. Ltd., Ma Sarada Cold Storage Pvt. Ltd. are the SKM Group’s foray in the cold storage domain. The Cold Storages are located in Kalna (Burdwan), Garbeta (Pashchim Midnapore) and Jayrambati (Bankura) in West Bengal. Being the largest chain of cold storages, presently the units can store 13,00,000 packets — while further expansion is being rolled out.
